LuLu Hypermarket Saudi Arabia and MWAN’s Launch the “Green Checkout Counter” Initiative

LuLu Hypermarket Saudi Arabia, in partnership with the Udeem Program of the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN), has officially launched the Green Checkout Counter Initiative, reinforcing the commitment of both parties to advancing environmental sustainability, promoting responsible consumption, supporting the circular economy, and contributing to the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

The launch ceremony, held at LuLu Hypermarket’s Riyadh branch, was attended by H.E. Eng. Othman Al Madani, General Supervisor of the Udeem Program, together with senior representatives from LuLu Hypermarket Saudi Arabia. During the event, both parties emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving impactful environmental initiatives with long-term sustainable outcomes.

The initiative is centered on reducing the use of single-use plastic bags by encouraging shoppers to adopt reusable shopping bags and promoting environmentally responsible behavior as part of the everyday shopping experience.

In its first phase, the initiative will be implemented across 50 LuLu Hypermarket branches throughout the Kingdom, featuring 100 Green Checkout Counters, with two dedicated counters in each branch. The program also includes interactive awareness kiosks, digital awareness campaigns, and educational in-store installations designed to increase environmental awareness and encourage the community to adopt more sustainable practices.

The initiative represents a practical model of cooperation between national entities and the private sector to promote waste reduction and sustainable practices. It aligns with MWAN’s strategic objectives of enabling organizations to develop and implement impactful environmental initiatives, measure their outcomes, and support Saudi Arabia’s transition toward a circular economy.

Mr. Mohamed Haris, Director of LuLu Hypermarket Saudi Arabia, stated:
“We are proud to partner with the Udeem Program in launching this important initiative, which represents another significant step toward embedding sustainable practices into the daily shopping experience. Through this initiative, we aim to reduce waste generation, raise environmental awareness among our customers, and contribute meaningfully to the Kingdom’s environmental sustainability goals.”

The Udeem Program, under the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN), reaffirmed its commitment to empowering government entities, private organizations, and the non-profit sector to develop and implement high-impact initiatives that generate measurable environmental, social, and economic benefits. The program noted that the Green Checkout Counter Initiative serves as a successful example of public-private collaboration in promoting sustainability and encouraging responsible environmental practices.

LuLu Hypermarket Saudi Arabia concluded by reaffirming its commitment to further expanding the initiative in the future, enhancing its positive environmental impact, and supporting the Kingdom’s national efforts toward building a cleaner and more sustainable future.
